About The UnSlut Project |
The UnSlut Project promoted gender equality, sex positivity, and comprehensive, age-appropriate sex education for all ages. It was a collaborative space for sharing stories about sexual bullying and "slut" shaming.
Using the pen name Emily Lindin, I founded The UnSlut Project in April, 2013 after hearing about the tragic suicides of girls like Rehtaeh Parsons, Amanda Todd, and Audrie Pott. I was both devastated and reminded of my own experience as a girl who'd been labeled the school "slut." Back in the late 1990s, I didn't feel comfortable confiding in my parents or other adults. I would have loved to have some reassurance that this time would pass and my life would get better. |
So I decided to create The UnSlut Project in the hopes that my own diary entries from ages 11-14 could provide some perspective to girls who currently feel trapped and ashamed. I published these entries online one at a time, only changing the names of the people involved, including my own. The diaries are the basis for my book, UnSlut: A Diary and a Memoir, available online and wherever books are sold.
The UnSlut Project has contributed to the momentum and global impact of the #MeToo movement, with people of all races, backgrounds, and ages speaking out about their experiences for the first time. These shared stories not only provide hope and solidarity to girls who are currently suffering - they demonstrate to us all just how widespread the issues of sexual bullying, harassment, assault, and "slut" shaming really are. Join us in spreading the word and changing our world.
